A lot of people under-estimate the importance of the Description metatag when designing their site. After the Title tag, the Description metatag is the most important piece of meta data for the page. Although it does not not directly influence page rank, it is what is seen on the Search Engine Result page for your entry. This influences the searcher to either click on your entry or not!
The number of clicks your site receives does influence pagerank. So not only is it important to make the description unique for each page, it has to be enticing to the searcher. Think of it as a "Sales Pitch in a tweet"
The correct way to add the Description MetaTag for your site is to add the following within the <head> tags for the page:
meta name="description" content="Your page description here" />
